Sophomore Rick Villanova, competing in pole vault, was one of the members of the Mount track and field team to qualify for the IC4A's at Bucknell this year.
"It was exciting when I jumped the qualifying height," said Villanova. "To qualify, I had to jump 15'9."
Headed to Bucknell with Villanova will be Quintin Hughley who qualified for the long jump, and the 4x800 team of Will Mitchell, Hayden Duffey, Joe Orselak and Gigi Gibilisco.
Villanova had a disappointing outing at the NEC's but hopes to use it as motivation at Bucknell.
"The NEC's were a big upset to me," Villanova said. "It was better than last year, but I jumped 15'3", six inches under my best vault this season. It got me second and first place was 15'7", so it's really bothering me [that] things happened the way they did."
Villanova has been preparing for the IC4A's by changing up his equipment to try to achieve higher jumps.
"To prepare for IC's we plan on starting to use some bigger sticks in order to get higher heights," Villanova said.
He has also been working hard to prepare for the upcoming outdoor season and already has some goals in mind.
"For outdoor season I just want to keep going bigger and bigger," Villanova said. "I don't want to plateau at all. I just want to keep getting higher heights."
The IC4A's will take place March 6 and 7, in Boston, Mass.
