For many, winter means cold weather, short days, and the occasional snowfall. But for the players on the Mount's ice hockey club, it means they will be in the ice rink wrapping up their season and gearing up for playoffs.
The team will make the trip to the Skate Frederick Ice Rink once a week, usually on Wednesday nights, to improve their skills and practice with one another.
The team was started in 1996 by Fr. Jim Donohue along with two members from the class of 1997. They initially started out with six to seven players.
Over the years, the team has made drastic progress and has grown immensely. Each year there is a greater time commitment and greater expectations to fulfill.
The club plays against several surrounding colleges who have club ice hockey programs similar to the Mount's. Teams such as Gettysburg College, Johns Hopkins University, and Loyola College are among the teams that the Mount competes against. The teams bring strong competition and intense play to each game, helping the Mount improve each time it steps on the rink.
As the season comes down to the last few games, the team will look forward to the playoffs, scheduled to begin next week.
