The freshmen on the Mount St. Mary's track and field team participate in all events, from the pole vault to sprints; high jump to relays. There are a variety on the team this year.
Freshman Heather Gula is a pole vaulter and says that it was rough getting into the swing of things.
"My first season on the track team has been a little rocky," Gula explained. "I … didn't really have a solid coach throughout high school, but I finally have Coach Deegan who is an amazing coach and he is helping me rebuild my vault with the proper technique."
Coaching isn't the only aspect of Gula's track life that has changed from high school.
"Practices are tough, but fun," Gula said. "At the beginning of the season, we started with circuit training, which is probably the hardest training I've ever experienced in my life."
Gula loves being a part of the team and expressed what an honor it is to be part of a Division I program.
"Meets are great," Gula said. "Even though I haven't been doing amazing, it's great to take the skills you've learned at practice and finally test your progress in a meet. I love competing with the team and cheering them on in their races."
Gula has had her ups and downs this season, but she hopes to use what she has learned to become even better and more skilled in the future.
"I realized that it's difficult for freshman to compete well during their first year of track," Gula said. "My main goal for this season is to learn from my mistakes and improve my technique."
The next meet is the Bucknell Winter Challenge on Feb. 13 in Lewisburg, Pa.
