This past week students and faculty across campus have collected the materials requested by Florence Benjamin, a Haiti native and current Bethesda resident, for a mini hospital established in the yard of a friend's collapsed house.
Benjamin arranged for American Airlines to allow her to bring these supplies back to Haiti while she searched for family and friends (who were all found safely). She then asked friends and neighbors to help her collect the necessities. Dr. Michael Barry was asked to help and brought the task here. He sent out e-mails with the requested supplies and proceeded to collect the goods brought in.
"I filled my SUV three times taking everything to her house," Barry said. From her house box-trucks were loaded up and carried not only what was donated by the Mount but also by several other groups to the airport. Overall six box-trucks were filled. Students and faculty members donated nearly an entire box-truck worth of bandages, rubbing alcohol, Neosporin, surgical tape, tents, light weight clothing, baby food and more.
Benjamin wanted to thank the Mount community for their generosity in helping stock the temporary hospital.
