The Mount has its very own Jillian Michaels on campus, but she has taken on a blonder and more effervescent form. By implementing her newest fitness program, Fitness Coordinator and Assistant Director of Rec. Services, Lisa Martin, is taking fitness to the next level.

Inspired by The Biggest Loser, the Winter Weight Loss Meltdown is challenging its 30 members to set goals, lose weight, and get fit with helpful tools and support.

"It's not just people trying to get in shape for Spring Break," said Martin. "The whole idea was really to jumpstart their body."

With an eight week time frame and five weigh-ins, Winter Weight Loss Meltdown members, which include Mount students and the Mount community, are setting goals not only for themselves and Martin, but also for their teammates.

With 10 random teams of three members have committed themselves to six days a week of working out; two of which are sessions with Martin, while the other four are on their own. On those solo days, members are encouraged to work out with their group members as a team to provide each other with more motivation and accountability.

Meltdown challengers have the option of taking any group fitness classes offered during the week or they can work out in the cardio and weight rooms with routines provided by Martin. In addition, two hikes have been scheduled and coordinated with CRUX for the group, one to Indian Lookout atop the mountain directly behind the Mount, and the second to Chimney Lookout in the Catoctin Mountains.

This program is not meant solely to provide short-term results but rather long-term goals that will keep the challengers motivated throughout the year. To help promote the challengers lasting fitness Martin is asking her students to do a bit of homework.

"I asked them to give me a goal for Feb. 19, which is four weeks into program and goal for March 26 which is the last day."

Challengers will also set goals that extend into June, Sept. and Dec. to further motivate their weight-loss effort.

In addition to the fitness side of the program, Martin is providing members with nutritional information and tips that she has picked up over the years.

With a passion for fitness and healthful living Martin stated, "It's taking those first steps for some people that are the hardest, and I wanted to provide that opportunity for them.
