Boy randomly meets girl on the boardwalk. Boy likes girl. Girl flirts with boy. It's not the latest episode of Jersey Shore. It's the newest book by Nicholas Sparks to be made into a movie.
I'm not quite sure how possible it is to fall in love with someone in a matter of about four days but Sparks seems to make it believable. While reading the book, I found myself rooting for macho John and the naive country girl Savannah to be together. During the book, John also battles his old ways, but being quick-tempered and a drinker doesn't scare the straight-laced Savannah away. Despite being stationed in Germany, John and Savannah write each other until he can return home again.
The book is written from John's perspective which is moving since hearing a guy "gush" about how in love he is isn't really going to be written in common "chick lit." However, I think leaving Savannah's story out while John is deployed was a mistake. There is a sense of suspense about what she's up to and what she's thinking about that is answered later.
Dear John is definitely a quick read with 288 pages - I read it in two days. The storyline isn't boring or dull which I often find common in Sparks' other books like Message in a Bottle or The Wedding.
Like every other Sparks book, there is a depressing ending. If you sobbed during The Notebook with Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling (hottie) then you'll enjoy this book. It's unpredictable in the sense that you don't know it's coming but you do know something is going to break your heart.
Overall, Dear John is a great beach read that would be better to get from the library or borrow from a friend. I'm looking forward to seeing the movie because I pictured Channing Tatum in the role of John while reading the book.
