I love organization. If you just walk around my apartment or take a peek in my weekly planner, you'll see that: my closet is neat and tidy and follows a strict classification code. On my desk, I have a bin for every school supply, and in the kitchen, all the food is tucked away in its proper place. In my planner, I color code events and due dates and map out my weeks with to-do lists and reminders. Although I've never owned a label maker, I feel like one would fit into my life very well.

Meanwhile, I feel like the Mount has gone a little label crazy. As I walk around buildings, there four-inch gold letters everywhere on this campus. They direct individuals to the new school of business in the AC, commemorate donors in Bradley Hall, or in their newest appearance, serve as a reminder in residence halls.

When I got to the Sheridan lobby for my Desk Assistant duty on Sunday night, I noticed the new addition to the décor. There are four pictures of Mount students and their mentors hanging in four mis-matched brown wooden frames with the Mount's four favorite words above each: faith discovery, leadership, and community. As I sat there, discerning the loose connection between community and a picture of five girls from last year's pillow fight, my immediate response was, "where is this money coming from?" My second response was, "Couldn't they at least find matching frames?"

As the Mount copes with tough times, including the Maryland Sellinger grant being pulled from its wallet, I would love to know that the money I pay either through student loans, scholarships, grants, or from my parents is put to good use.

There are many necessary improvements being made on campus including the renovation of Flynn Hall and the Terrace, as well as new furniture additions in the apartments. Each of these changes effects the quality of student life on campus as well as the future of the institution. The cosmetic improvements to our brick-lined sidewalks and the signs directing you to every building on campus are simply just for show.

I agree. I think that many Mount students are frustrated with the cosmetic improvements made to the school. I would rather see the money go towards practical and useful things first, and then go toward making them look nice. (Continued…)
