Four pillars of cosmetic enhancement

We should continue focus our actions on improving the things that serve a purpose and abandon projects that are purely cosmetic and -in my opinion- unattractive. Has anyone seen the glass plates that were installed in Knott Auditorium? Perhaps because they've been taken down and re-hung so many times that you missed them. They were up last fall, down in the spring, replaced by banners in the summer, up again in the fall and missing now, leaving unsightly bolts in the wall. Some artwork, eh?

As I sit pondering the pictures, I can't help but think of the things the Mount needs: a better cardio room at the ARCC and office space for current professors and faculty. I don't think the Mount needs a reminder of the four pillars: nouns that haunt your every glance on campus; words that are mocked at least once by everyone.

Last week I disclosed how much I spent shopping in one month. Maybe the Mount can disclose the cost per letter of this new project. With budgets getting tighter, I wonder if anyone regrets picking such long words to spell out like "leadership" and "community."

I agree. I think that many Mount students are frustrated with the cosmetic improvements made to the school. I would rather see the money go towards practical and useful things first, and then go toward making them look nice. (Continued…)
