Senior point guard Jeremy Goode led the Mount with 18 points and four assists in a loss to No. 17 Oklahoma by a score of 95-71 in front of 10,490 Sooner fans on Saturday, Nov. 14.
"I enjoy playing in front of the crowd and I'm sure that my teammates would say the same," said Goode. "The one thing that we are taking from this game is that we have to understand when things don't go right we just have to focus a little more and play with more poise."
The Mount kept up with the Sooners until late in the first half, when Oklahoma went on a 14-7 before the break.
From there out it was unlikely the Mount would make up the point deficit, proving true as Oklahoma stretched its lead and left the court with a 24 point win.
The loss, however, proved that the Mount's rotation could keep pace with a Sooner lineup team that reached the Elite Eight last season. The Mount's starting five combined for 51 points compared to the 52 scored by Oklahoma's starters. The difference in the score line resulted from bench points, as the Mount only produced 20 points while Oklahoma's bench scored 43.
"We have a better understanding that we have to try to keep making the correct plays for 40 minutes" said head coach Milan Brown. "We did some very good things as a team against OU, but we also had some lapses and we paid for it."
The Mount struggled with rebounds and second-chance points against the much bigger Oklahoma squad. While the Mount managed to grab a total of 30 rebounds, only six were offensive and led to only 8 second-chance points. Meanwhile, Oklahoma came down with 51 rebounds (18 offensive) leading to 20 second chance points.
The Mount's next game is Wednesday night at American University and is followed by this weekend's clash with Catholic rival Loyola.
