On Sunday January 10, 2010 four Mount students are participating in the Walt Disney World Marathon in Orlando, Florida. This race is considered one of the 'most magical 26.2 miles on Earth' because the course runs through all four theme parks. The run starts in Epcot then continues through Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, MGM Studios and eventually finishes back at Epcot.
Seniors Liz Mitros, Jessica Sauers, and Sean Ellison, along with recent graduate Analiza Saraza are taking time out of their winter break to travel down to Disney. Over the past few months they have been training hard independently as well as helping each other train.
"I was talking with Jess about my half marathon I ran in October," said Liz, "we both love running and staying active. I told her I was running the Disney marathon and was trying to persuade her to run it with me. She wanted to run, so we deiced that we would train together on long runs."
For long runs on Sunday they have travelled so far as the trails in Harper's Ferry, Md. and the Appalachian Trail. They are looking to train on other trails around the Northern Central Railroad and at Rock Creek Park. During the week they run around Emmitsburg and the trails around the ARRC.
Sean is also an avid runner, participating in the Baltimore Marathon last month on Oct. 11, and now training for the Rock and Roll Marathon in Las Vegas on Dec. 6 followed by the Disney Marathon in January.
"I started running when I came to the Mount," said Sean. "I began looking for something else to take up my free time and keep me active. I was running a lot in the ROTC [Reserve Officers' Training Corps] program and decided to do it more in my free time. My mom began running marathons and invited me to come with her. Since then I have run multiple races and enjoyed the marathon experience."
Analiza graduated last year but talks with Liz about running often. Although she is training separately they are making the trek down to Disney as a group.
