In my History of English Drama class this semester, we have gone into great discussion on character foils in early theatre - the plays of Shakespeare, Marlowe, and others. Ever since our discussion on characterization and how one individual can bring out the best or worst in your own character, I've noticed some foils in my own life.

Friday night, the Class of 2010 embarked on the traditional Fells Point trip taken by senior classes at least back to 2007. And, on Saturday night, I joined many members from the class of 2007 in Baltimore for the highly anticipated yearly Young Alumni party cruise. It's remarkable to see the difference and similarities between Mounties of a previous generation and the current students.

For example, both groups of Mounties were equally excited for the night's festivities. Both had a mixture of people who went "all out" and those who stayed more reserved. Both had a varied sense of what would be appropriate attire for the evening, and both seemed to truly enjoy themselves.

However, the Class of 2010 had a carefree attitude about them whereas the alumni - though young - were bogged down with work and grad school plans and the worries of life. Some hid it in their wine glasses while others just harkened back to old memories, but it made me realize something.

This is the time in our lives where we can live relatively carefree. Sure, we have responsibilities like homework, some of us have jobs, and other on-campus activities and clubs, but our lives are pretty great.

We get up in the morning to either have it be a Monday/Wednesday/Friday schedule or a Tuesday/Thursday schedule. How beautiful is this? Each day is different than the one before it! When you're working a 9-5 shift, you just don't get that. And after the past few summers I've had working full time, I can vouch for the misery of the 40-hour work week.

We get to regularly participate in the things that we love: if you like music, you can perform in the band or chorale. If you like sports, there are intramurals. While the Mount doesn't offer nearly as many clubs and organizations as larger schools, I think it's safe to say that there is something on campus to capture your interest.

Okay, so you have to work a part time job. That just requires a little tighter time budget and a few extra sacrifices. Relish in the fact that you work part time because in a few years or so, you'll wish you only had to put in 15 hours a week before you could go home and find new ways to procrastinate.

From this point on, I'm going to enjoy what's left of my senior year. I'm going to write the papers and do the readings, but I'm also going to take time to rejoice in the smaller things: the movies with friends, the nights spent with a coffee cup and a study guide, the meetings, the rehearsals. . . in short, the craziness.

Anthony Robbins has said, "Live life fully while you're here. Experience everything. Take care of yourself and your friends. Have fun, be crazy, and be weird. Go out and screw up! You're going to do it anyway, so you might as well enjoy the process."
