The men's soccer team lost its final game to Monmouth 3-1 last weekend, crushing its NEC playoff hopes.
The team can, however, be proud of its performance against a Monmouth team that is now ranked 8th in the country. In fact, the Mount was one of only two teams in the conference to score against the Hawks.
With the loss, the Mount ended the season fifth in the NEC with an overall record of 6-10-1 and a conference record of 5-4-1.
The result ended a five game unbeaten streak which had put the team in position to make the playoffs, showing the heart and determination that captain Eric Detzel desired earlier in the season when the team was not getting the results that were expected.
While the team did not replicate last year's playoff run, some positives can still be taken from this season. Against Monmouth, sophomore Chris Wheeler scored his eighth goal of the season (six in conference play) ranking him as one of the top three goal-scorers in the NEC for the second year in a row. Scott Phinith also reached the top five in assists, notching five on the season.
Expectations will be high next season as the team loses only four seniors. The Mountaineers will also return nine players that started 10 or more games this season, including their top three goal scorers.
