This Saturday the women's cross country team will be sending two runners, freshmen Megan Kinsella and Kathryn Franke, to compete in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional race at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in Princess Anne, MD.
"I am very excited that they will have the opportunity to compete against other runners with a very high level of talent," said assistant coach Larry O'Hara.
"We are going on a lot of long runs to keep our legs loose and we also do some race pace intervals on the track to work on our speed," said Franke. "Megan and I have been working together throughout the season to push each other and try to improve our times. Training together for regionals has helped us both a lot."
While Kinsella has been running for years, Franke is new to the scene.
"This is my first year running cross country, so to be able to go to regionals without much experience is an honor."
The 6k regional race is a bit longer than the typical 5k races that the girls are used to running. In order to get them ready for the competition, O'Hara has been giving the girls modified workouts.
"Their Regional race is 6 km and [last week's] workout was 6.4 km at around race pace," O'Hara said. "It is a good simulation and gives me a very good idea of their fitness at this time."
Coming off the heels of the Northeast Conference championships, Kinsella is ready to further establish herself among collegiate runners.
"I'm actually more excited for this race than nervous because there is no pressure like there was at NEC's," said Kinsella. "We can just go out there, have fun, race hard, and put down a good time."
