Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse fell to Lafayette 10-8 Saturday afternoon in non-conference action and fall to 1-5 on the season.

The Leopards lit up the scoreboard within the first five minutes of the half and set the tempo of the game early. The Mountaineers were able to respond with their own goal scored by freshman Anthony Golden, and 15 seconds later freshman Mike Adkins found the twine to put the Mount up by one. Both goals were assisted by fellow freshman Christian Kellett. Before the end of the quarter, Lafayette answered the Mounts run by tying the score at two.

"We expected Lafayette to be a tough team and we knew we needed to work together and stick to the game plan," Adkins stated in response to the opening minutes of the game.

The Mountaineers opened the second quarter with intensity by scoring twice early, one goal from freshman Ryan Shewell, and another from Adkins. Shewell scored his first collegiate goal 15 seconds into the quarter and Adkins scored four minutes later. Once again, both goals were assisted by Kellett.

With the Mount up by two, the Leopards changed the pace of the game and were able to sneak two more goals past a tough Mount defense, tying the game 4-4 before half time. During this quarter alone, the Leopards out-shot the Mount 15-5 and recorded 13 ground balls compared to the Mounts' three.

"By half time we knew we needed to start winning more of the groundballs and face-offs, especially because the game was back and forth a lot in scoring, so possession was key," Adkins said.

After half time both teams returned to the field, and Lafayette returned with the same intensity. They opened the half by notching two goals and took the 6-4 advantage over the Mountaineers. Adkins responded with his third goal of the game with less than five minutes left in the half and cut the lead to one. Lafayette, however, found the net 40 seconds later and regained its two goal lead. As the clock dwindled down, senior Geery Grant was able to convert a shot, making the score 7-6 to end the third quarter.

The Mountaineers opened with another Adkins goal three minutes into the fourth quarter, assisted by Kellett. The Leopards responded again, this time with three goals, giving them a 10-7 lead with less than four minutes left on the clock.

"After they scored their third goal I knew we were capable of coming back, but towards the end penalties came back to hurt us," Adkins stated about the last minutes of the game.

The Mountaineers were able to get off one more goal, unassisted by Kellett, with 1:06 left, but it was not enough for a comeback.

Adkins finished the game not only scoring his first collegiate goal, but also leading the scoring with four, while fellow freshman Kellett dished out five assists and a goal. On the defensive end, sophomore goal keeper T.C. DiBartolo made 16 saves in the loss.

"This is a tough loss for us obviously, but we know we need to put it behind us and prepare for our next game," Adkins said.
