Pro-Life speaker and feminist Karen Shablin spoke on the topic of abortion Oct. 8 here at Mount St. Mary's University. Along with her message of hope, Shablin spoke of ways to help expectant and current mothers and fathers who attend universities.
She spoke of her experience having an abortion and how that changed her. She said that it sticks with her years and years later, though she had no second thoughts about her abortion at the time. She explained how she did not run into any Pro-Life groups protesting outside of the clinic she went to, but that even if she had, they wouldn't have changed her mind. All they would have done was make her feel worse, in her opinion.
Even still, she spoke about the importance of discussing pregnancy among students on campus and how it is important to set up forums to help people with the situations they are in.
"If you're not talking about it, you can't deal with it," said Shablin. She said that support groups and extra facilities for expectant parents are key to help reduce abortion rates.
Shablin also said that it is important to focus not only on the mother's and baby's well being, but the father's as well.
At the end of the talk Fr. Brian Nolan closed with a brief talk about his work with Project Rachel-a post-abortion healing ministry-and a prayer. Reflecting on his work with Project Rachel, he said that "healing comes in layers, but there is always hope for a new beginning."
