Director of Community Service and Service Learning Melissa Main will is getting her hair dyed. The makeover, however, will not be complete unless an additional $2,000 is raised for the ALS/Nusbaum Service Fundraiser by 2 p.m. today.
According to a campus-wide e-mail sent by Main on Tuesday at 4:47 p.m., $3,010.91 has been raised, enough to force Main to dye her hair while Dr. Mike Miller, Ken McVearry, Dr. Dan Soller and Fr. Brian Nolan will all be shaving their beards that total more than 55 years of growth.
While it is unlikely that the almost-$2,000 will be raised and force Main to wear a skirt to work for the rest of the semester, an additional $499.09 will ensure that Miller and McVearry also shave their heads.
"Beards will be shaved and my hair will be dyed," said Main, who is optimistic that the second goal of $3,500 can be reached if a "landslide" of money is donated by the deadline.
"There is a good chance. I think if the students who know Dr. Miller know that he's had his beard for 14 years ... I would hope that they would push to see [his head shaved, too.]"
Main said that McVearry will shave his beard Thursday night and Soller next week after the Bicentennial.
Miller, however, will make a spectacle of his shave. He will use the bathroom in Lower McGowan to shave and come out at different periods to show people the step-by-step process.
Main added that she is unsure when Fr. Brian will shave his beard.
"They had a good inclination that they were going to have to shave," Main said. And she's equally prepared to dye her hair.
"Probably a light brown. Not pink or green - I have to be professional and keep my job," Main said in reference to her color of choice.
Donations will be accepted tomorrow in the offices of campus ministry and community service in Lower McGowan, by Miller or in Patriot Hall during lunch.
