Talk to anyone on campus without a car and they'll tell you how frustrating it is. Getting off campus for a simple trip to the outlets or Wal-Mart requires scheduling and planning ahead of time; a trait not always found in college students. So this year many careless students were excited when news of a Friday night shuttle spread around campus.
"The Friday night shuttle was started by requests from students; they identified it as a need on campus and through cooperation between SGA and administration we were able to implement a trial program," said Sean Adams, Assistant Dean and Director of Campus Activities.
The shuttle runs every Friday night that students are here and makes stops at the Outlets, Movie theatres in Gettysburg, Wal-Mart and Giant foods. It will run from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m., making pick-ups and drop-offs in front of McGowan every hour-and-a-half. The shuttle will run for the remainder of the semester to gauge how popular it is.
"We did a first run of the shuttle last week and had 28 people take advantage of the service, with the majority of the students going to the outlets or the movie theatre," Adams said.
The Friday shuttle is not only convenient for students without cars on campus, but for students who are worried about the rising gas prices. The shuttle provides the opportunity for thrifty students to get off campus without having to stress about gas money as the shuttle is free for all students.
The Shuttle takes students from the Mount, to the Outlets and Movie theaters in Gettysburg to Wal-Mart and Giant Foods in Gettysburg and back to the Mount. The Shuttle picks up and drops off in front of McGowan at 5 p.m., 6:30 p.m., 8 p.m., 9:30 p.m. and 11 p.m.
While the shuttle will not replace the convenience of having a car on campus, the program will be the perfect way for students to enjoy a stress free night off-campus.
