Milan Brown, head coach of the men's basketball team, is the man of the hour right now. He recently led his team to victory in the NEC Championship and succeeded in taking them to the NCAA Tournament.
"We are excited for the opportunity to represent the university on a national stage. At the first team meeting, we talked about winning the championship. So it's been a goal of ours since August," Brown said.
Brown, 37, is entering his fifth season as coach at Mount St. Mary's, and the program is progressing at a steady rate.
"He really knows how to build a team. When he recruits players, he tries to help them be as good as they can be. He works the players hard and the results are showing," former head coach Jim Phelan said.
Brown said that in his professional career, taking a team to the NCAA Tournament is his biggest accomplishment.
"I am very proud of the guys and thankful for all of the effort they've put into this. Because we are tight and like family, we are able to be successful. That helps us become closer. When we are going through a hard time, we help each other get through it. When something good happens, like going to the NCAA Tournament, it is even better because we have each other to share it with," Brown said.
In 1993, Brown graduated from Howard University in Washington D.C. with a bachelor's degree in Marketing. He played basketball at Howard from 1989 to 1993. He has the third highest free throw percentage (86.3 percent) for a single season at Howard and ranks fourth in career 3-pointers with 157. He holds the school's all-time record for career assists with 445 and ranks eighth in scoring with 1,102 points. Howard retired his number in December 2005.
Brown began his collegiate coaching career in 1995 as a part of Old Dominion University's coaching staff.
"I was looking to move up the ladder, and I knew I wanted to be able to recruit players," Brown said.
In 1997, he came to the Mount as an assistant coach to Phelan.
