The competition has begun as RecycleMania reaches the Mount.

What began as a friendly way to improve recycling in 2001 has now spread throughout the entire country. Now during its eighth year, RecycleMania has reached over 400 colleges and universities as a positive way of reducing waste on college campuses.

All campuses are given a 10-week long period from January 27 to April 5, during which the goal is to collect the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita, or have the highest recycling rate.

The University Recycling Committee, a sub-committee of the ESSC, initiated the competition. Dr. Michelle Bower is the Chair of the University Recycling Committee at Mount St. Mary's.

"The main goal of this event is to increase student awareness of campus recycling and waste minimization," Bower said.

RecycleMania at the Mount is most evident in Patriot hall where numerous blue recycling bins are placed outside of the dish drop off targeting clear glass, cardboard and disposables [such as new clear cups, clam shells and salad bar containers].

"This competition is intended to reward those schools that generate the least amount of waste and recyclables, emphasizing reuse and source reduction over recycling. All participating schools are required to report measurements on a weekly basis in pounds," Bower said.

Schools that have the best numbers are rewarded with trophies, awards, and participant certificates. However, the greatest reward is knowing and understanding a personal contribution to a cleaner environment.

Recycle bins can also be found in lower McGowan. It is necessary that all food and drink is emptied from the recyclables before they are placed into the bins.

"We have several weeks left in the competition, but our real goal is to raise awareness about reducing, reusing and recycling that last throughout the year," Bower said.

Starting to recycle now can help create life-long habits that can only improve our environment. More information can be found at www.recyclemania.org .
