RATS clean up campus

It's the end of the year, you are cleaning out your apartment but realize that you have more furniture and household appliances than you know what to do with. That's the time when you wonder "why can't there be a place on campus to drop off these extra items that I will never use again?" There is.
Started several years ago, RATS (Recycle All That Stuff) is an organization that sets up tents the week before final exams on the quad near the apartments. These tents accommodate any supplies that people on campus no longer want. College students throwaway about 640 pounds of trash a year.
In the past, RATS has gathered boxes of food, clothes, microwaves, couches and futons. These items are collected and then sold at a yard sale. The money profited from the yard sale is put back into an Emergency Employment Fund maintained by Campus Ministry. Last year, RATS not only received over 20 boxes of food which was donated to the food bank, but raised closed to $1000.
Not sure what to do with that futon or couch originally picked specifically for your apartment that you know will just continue to pick up dust in your parent's garage? Donate it to RATS- donating old stuff to help a worthy cause instead of eventually throwing it away.
