Speed dating is a way to manage to go on a high number of dates in a short amount of time. The idea is to get yourself out there and see who you can meet and possibly even hit it off with someone.
The job market also has its version of speed dating. It's called job fairs, and Mount St. Mary's has another one coming on Wednesday, March 28 in Patriot Hall. It's a chance to have miniature interviews with any number of employers that interest you.
The idea is not only to get you comfortable with speaking to employers but also to get your name out there and orbiting in the realm of careers. The first job is often the most important to get. Not because it's the best, or the most long lasting, but because once you already have a steady job, your resume looks a whole lot brighter, thus making it less of a leap to apply elsewhere when the time is right.
Amidst all of the bittersweet emotion of graduation, there should be an intense excitement lingering somewhere in there. Sure, no longer will you be able to sleep until noon on a Tuesday because you don't have class until 1 p.m. And sure, people are going to start expecting responsibility from you. But on another level, this is the moment when you become completely independent.
All those years you said you wanted some independence from your parents as long as it didn't cut off their bank account from yours will be over. The reality is that you have to get a job. It's time to start supporting yourself on a whole new plane.
Consider yourself fortunate. Last year was one of the best years for graduates in the job market and the prognosticators predict that 2007 will be an even better one. Your chances of clinching a good job - maybe even the perfect entry level job - are better now than they have ever been before. Employers are expecting to hire 17.4 percent more graduates from this year's graduating class than they did in previous years. I'd say the chances look pretty good.
The career trends for 2007 are another thing that can alleviate that burden piling on your shoulders as graduation and reality approach. The number one trend among job markets is a good one: bigger paychecks.
