"The growth in the use of take-out products has been explosive, doubling year over year for a few years now," said Howard Williams, manager of Dining Services. "Even if something is recyclable, it takes resources to create it, resources to recycle it and tremendous cost. A reduction of the use of the items has to be part of the solution."
Williams also said that the Environmental Club, along with SGA, are working together to come up with a solution to this growing problem, and a proposal is in the works to get biodegradable to-go containers available in Patriot Hall.
"Take-out boxes can be cumbersome, so using plates all day helped with speed of service," Williams said of the positive impact that was had on the Dining Services staff as well as on the environment. "There was also a huge decrease in the volume of trash so that made many of their jobs easier."
To students who might have been concerned about the work and effort required to deal with items that remain in Patriot Hall, Henning responded, "Although washing plates and forks still involves the consumption of resources, overall, the net impact of using disposable containers is much more detrimental and wasteful."
