It was announced Monday, Feb. 12 that Dr. David Rehm had been officially appointed to the position, After serving as Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs since June 2006.

"I'm delighted to serve the institution in this way," Rehm said.

Rehm has worked at the Mount for the past 12 years. He started in the philosophy department in 1995, was promoted to associate professor in 2001, and became Dean for Academic Affairs in 2004. Rehm also directed Freshman Seminar from 1997 to 2003 and co-chaired the Middle States reaccredidation process with Dr. Michael Towle from 2002 to 2005.

"I applied initially, but then withdrew my application," Rehm said. "In relation to the top 10, I did not have nearly the experience they did."

Rehm explained that over the summer, a search committee was appointed by President Thomas Powell and then the job description for vice president for academic affairs was carved out.

"The search committee included representatives from members of the community," said Executive Vice President Dan Soller who, along with Dr. Emilio Rodriguez, co-chaired

the search committee.

After the committee was appointed, Rehm said the job was advertised and applications began coming in. The Committee narrowed their pool to about 15 applicants.

Next, the Search Committee held neutral site interviews (off campus interviews) at BWI Airport with 5-6 people for a few hours, according to Rehm.

Based on the neutral site interviews, two applicants came to campus for full-day interviews, Rehm said.

"Both of the candidates were judged acceptable by the Search Committee, but the President was not comfortable hiring either of them," Rehm said.

According to Rehm, as of right before Christmas, "there were no candidates left. I had withdrawn my name, and there were no external candidates remaining in the pool, since all had been eliminated."

Then the President went back to the Search Committee to see where to go from there, Rehm said. At this point, Rehm was asked to resubmit his application.

"On Jan. 18, I had a campus interview -- a full day of interviewing with the Search Committee, faculty, the cabinet and students," Rehm said.
