Who knew that kicking up your heels could help fight cancer?

Lisa Reed, administrative assistant in the Media Center, and her Relay for Life team will sponsor a benefit dance at the American Legion in Thurmont on Saturday, Feb. 24. A minimum $10 donation is required and all proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society.

The event is open to the public. Prior registration is not required. Attendees will be able to purchase drinks at a cash bar; the team will provide snacks.

Local band Sticktime, who will play at the Ott House on Friday, Feb. 2 and Saturday, Feb. 3, are donating their talents for the event. Bob Calo, the band's singer and lead guitarist, and drummer Chris Holland are Mount graduates (Classes of 1984 and 1989, respectively).

Door prizes including a Mary Kay basket and wooden shelf item, among others, will be given away, and there will be a cash raffle.

Reed became involved with the organization's Relay for Life four years ago, after losing her father to cancer.

"My father died five years ago from cancer and then my sister [Lynn Ott] decided she wanted to do something to memorialize him, so she became our [relay] team captain," Reed said. "This is our fourth year doing it but we've learned over time that some people do bigger things to raise money, and we decided that we needed to do something on a larger scale than sending out flyers and asking for donations."

Reed, who has the foot for dancing in the family, knew just what she wanted to do to raise that extra money.

"Because I like to dance, I decided to go with this...my sister doesn't like to dance, that's just not her cup of tea," Reed said. "But she said 'if you want to have a dance, run with it and let me know what I need to do.'"

And so their first dance benefit came to be.

Reed and her sister organized the event, which Reed says is shaping up to be a "whale of a time."
