During the Christmas break, Mount Saint Mary's implemented a recycling program designed to increase student awareness about the importance of recycling and keeping the campus clean.

The program has a long history, originally due to the interest of the environmental club, who for the last year and a half, have been doing recycling and "have kept it on the hot seat," said Dr. Brian Henning. He is a philosophy professor who is working very closely with the program to ensure its success.

"Dr. Powell made this program on his top 10 list of priorities to address environmental issues," Henning stated. "He dedicated a good sum of money for it, and deserves a lot of credit for getting the program up and running."

The environmental club and Michael Malewicki, vice president of business and finance, also provided a lot of leadership in making this program a reality.

According to the Physical Plant, every year the Mount sends over one million pounds of solid waste to area landfills.  In order to decrease this amount, bins have been placed all over campus, including in residence halls.  Students have received e-mails explaining restrictions and what is to be recycled.

"Brad Duggan and the SGA are planning to purchase bags students could use to store recyclable materials and other awareness building activities," Henning added.

In addition to implementing the recycling program, the environmental club has been instrumental in taking materials to Thurmont to be recycled.

"The university will also be doing this [therefore] meeting their obligation to be a good steward of these natural resources," Henning said.

Students who are interested in being proactive in the recycling program can participate by recycling items listed on signs, encouraging friends to recycle, and avoiding putting materials that are not recyclable inside the bins.

In participating, students are "saving themselves money by decreasing waste disposal costs," added Henning.

Items from the recycling program will be used for the Adams Rescue Mission, to help the poor.  By recycling, the Mount is being consistent with its Catholic social mission.

Students who have questions concerning recycling should e-mail recycle@msmary.edu.
